GM Arnold Denker Rules & Information(Revised 7 May 2013) General Information This Invitational tournament will be played from July 27 to July 30 during the 2013 U.S. Open. The location will be the Madison Marriott West, 1313 John Q Hammons Drive, Middleton, WI 53562, 608.831.2000. Chess Room Rate: $99. The Grandmaster Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions fields Champions from across the United States. The winner of the tournament shall receive the title of Denker Champion of Champions. In case of ties, co-champions shall be recognized. The “Denker” is considered a prestigious event recognizing High School State Champions. The Executive Board of the U.S. Chess Federation has added the Denker Champion to its list of qualifiers for the World Youth Championship. The qualifying student in case of a tie will be the highest finishing player on tie-breaks. Eligibility Each state (which shall include DC for purposes of this Tournament) shall be allowed one Representative as determined by their USCF State Affiliate. The Denker Nomination Form will be filled out by the authorized state official. We strongly encourage each affiliate to identify a tournament to determine its High School Champion. Failing this, rating or some other criteria may be acceptable. Alternates may be substituted as the official Representative. If there are an uneven number of entrants in the tournament, the host state may enter an additional qualified player. The additional player is eligible for prize monies, and the UTD Scholarship. Should the USCF state affiliate fail to respond to the notice for this tournament by July 5, a Denker Co-Chair may determine the candidate from that state. Representatives must be residents of the state they are representing (this includes N. California, S. California and Washington, DC). All players, including home schooled students, must be under the age of 20 on September 1 of the year in which the tournament is held. They must have taken at least 50% of their educational instruction during the spring before the Denker using the 9th through 12th grade curriculum. The Representative may not be listed as a full-time student at any college. Proof of eligibility shall be the responsibility of the players and the USCF state official certifying the Representative or Alternate. This playing schedule is especially convenient, because it allows players an opportunity to participate in the US Open. This is possible because you can now enter the US Open upon completion of the Denker Championship. Please note that the USCF Delegates voted to provide a 50% entry fee (based on the lowest entry fee) for all Denker participants who choose to participate in the US Open after the Denker is concluded. Full US Open entry fee is paid in advance and 50% is refunded. Rules Players shall be required to play all six rounds of the tournament. Players need to notify the TD staff if they become ill during the tournament, so that the host state alternate can be substituted. Players expelled from the tournament, or who withdraw, forfeit all expense money.Each player shall be required to furnish the TD with a legible and complete score sheet at the conclusion of each round. The time control will be 90 minutes per player with 30 second increment added per move. This is the approved FIDE time control. Scholarship Details The Denker Tournament of High School Champions is proud to announce that the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) has once again given a scholarship to be awarded to the winner of the 2013 Denker tournament. This scholarship covers complete cost of tuition and mandatory fees through eight semesters (four years) of enrollment. In addition, the Chess II Scholarship provides a $1500 per semester contribution toward rental expenses incurred at university on-campus housing. The Chess Program Scholarship guidelines apply with regard to GPA requirements and probation. The scholarship is valued at $68,000 for an out-of-state student. This will give you a look into what UTD is all about and what players can expect when they attend UTD. The eligible winner, decided by tie-breaks, must meet UTD entry requirements and have been in grades 9-11 during the previous spring. Sponsors The sponsors: Mitchell Denker, the U.S. Chess Trust, the United States Chess Federation, Dwight Barber, American Chess Equipment, Inc. and the National Scholastic Chess Foundation. To reimburse players for their expenses, the following awards will be given: 1st Place: $800, 2nd Place $500, 3rd Place $400, 4th Place $300, 5th Place $200, all players who tie for 5th Place will be guaranteed a minimum of $200. Each participant will receive a Gold Medallion provided by American Chess Equipment, Inc. Additional prizes including a gift certificate will be awarded for the two Best Games and the Biggest Upset in each of the rounds of the tournament. Financial aid is available. Ursula Foster Award There will be a $500 Ursula Foster award presented by the Chess Trust to the highest finisher under the age of 16 (as of the first day of the tournament). If there are fewer than two eligible participants, the award will go to the top finisher under the age of 17. There must be at least two eligible players for the award to be given. This award will not be split. In the event of ties, the recipient will be the player with the highest tie-break score. Travel & Accommodations Players are responsible for their own travel and accommodations. Players sharing rooms should make their arrangements carefully, as neither the USCF nor the tournament is responsible for any consequences arising from such arrangements. Please note that registration in a hotel room will require a person 18 years of age or older to be present. Contact Information Each state affiliate needs to request and complete the Nomination Form from the Denker organizer. Each player must provide the Denker Co-Chair/Representative with a phone number of a parent or other responsible adult in case of an emergency.
