Best of CLO 2014 #2: Shankland on Brazil
February 5, 2015
Best of CLO #2 is Shankland on Brazil: Focused on the Knockout by GM Sam Shankland. This piece chronicled Sam’s successful trip to Brazil for the Continental Championships. According to Judge "f-pawn" Michael Aigner, “The author allows readers to climb into the mind of a young and motivated Grandmaster on the warpath” while Jennifer Vallens said, “I felt like I was taken on his journey with him.  His love of competition shines through brilliantly in this article.”

I came to Brazil with one goal in mind and only one priority- qualify for the World Cup. I love the concept of knockout style tournaments and I think this is the best way to run any individual sport (I cite tennis as a prime example), both for the fans and for the players. Everyone loves filling out a bracket, matches go down to the wire, and the high stakes “win or go home” kind of game makes for some real excitement.

Shankland continues to climb the world rankings
, and he recently wrote a two-part series for CLO on his quest from Grandmaster to the top 100 players in the World. See part I here and look for Part II early next week.
