Glenn L. Haynes (1923-2004)

Glenn L. Haynes, a former USCF member from Parkersburg, West Virginia died August 9, 2004 in Camden Clark Medical Center. He was 81. He was born March 9, 1923 in Parkersburg, the son of Lane A. and Gladys C. (Bane) Haynes. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1942. He received a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a master's degree from Vanderbilt University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served as a naval gunner on merchant ships. Mr Haynes was employed by the state of West Virginia for about 40 years, the last 25 of which he worked for the Division of Rehabilitation Services at he Colin Anderson Center.

An avid chess player, Mr. Haynes was a leader of the Parkersburg Chess Club for the past several years of his life. His first USCF-rated tournament was the Parkersburg Hoagie Hutt Open in November 1992. His last event was the 10th annual Parkersburg Homecoming Open in August 2002. He competed in a total of 52 tournaments in a 10-year period. He was also an avid bird watcher and a ham radio operator. Licensed with the Federal Communications Commission as an amateur radio operator, his call sign was AA8AY. He was a member of the Wood County Historical Society. He was also an Eagle Scout and had worked with a local Boy Scout before his passing.
