Cadet Champs Begin July 20 in Rockville

The Maryland Chess Association with be hosting the 2013 US Cadet Championship from July 20-23 at the Rockville Hilton in Rockville, Maryland. The Cadet is an invitational tournament for the top US players under the age of 16. The top eight players will be playing a round robin tournament to determine the champion. The winner will receive a four-year scholarship to UMBC.

The players in this year's tournament are:

  • Varun Krishnan (2346)
  • Michael Brown (2343)
  • Ruifeng Li (2326)
  • James Black (2310)
  • Christopher Wu (2293)

  • Only 105 ratings points separate the top from the bottom. So, all the games will be competitive. The games will be at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on July 20-22 and at 10 a.m. on July 23. The standings, pairings, pictures, live video, and live games will be at http://uscadet.mdchess.com.

    In addition to the UMBC scholarship, the top three players will receive free entry into the Washington International that starts on August 5th. The International is the flagship of the Washington International Chess Festival. 

    Alongside the six-day International, the Festival will have four other tournaments: a weekend Swiss, The 3rd Annual Potomac OpenThe Razuvaev MemorialThe Washington International Blitz, and The Washington International Rapid.
