The fifth New York International (June 20-24), held at Saint John's University and sponsored by the Marshall Chess Club, kicked off with over 70 participating
players, including seven GMs and many talented juniors. First round upsets abounded. Christopher Gu defeated last year's champ IM Robert Hungaski and Kevin Wang beat veteran GM Hecht.
