WashingtonDCLogo.jpgA major international Swiss tournament will debut in Washington this July from July 28 – August 1st. The 9-round tournament will award $17,000 in guaranteed prizes and will provide an opportunity for players to earn GM and IM norms. A minimum FIDE rating of 2100 will be required to play in order to improve the chances for earning norms.

The organizers plan to invite enough non-US players to allow norms to be earned without regard to the FIDE affiliations of each player’s opponents. The tournament will be providing all the equipment for the players and breakfast each morning.

Running concurrently with the Swiss tournament will be the Platonov Memorial Tournament. This will be a six-player round robin. The players planning to attend this tournament are GMs Lev Alburt (USA), Boris Gulko (USA), Sam Palatnik (USA), Vladimir Malaniuk (Ukraine), Mikhail Gurevich (Turkey), and Adrian Mihalcisin (Slovenia). The tournament will coincide with the release of the new book Platonov's Academy by Lev Alburt and Sam Palatnik.

On the Friday before the tournament, there will be an opening reception and the Washington International Blitz Tournament, which will be open to everyone.

More information about the tournament, including a list of pre-registered players (Onischuk, Friedel, etc.) can be found at http://washingtoninternationalchess.org
