Philly International Champ IM Leonid Gerzhoy
IM Leonid Gerzhoy won clear first at the Philadelphia International along with a $3000 prize. The event preceded the massive World Open, which kicked off tonight. New Samford fellow GM Aleksander Lenderman, finished clear second for $1500. FM Michael Shahade, also featured in the video, is back into the game after a long layoff. He cashed for $200. Also interviewed are two players who exemplify the ability of chess to cross generation lines: 11-year-old WFM Danitza Vazquez Maccarini & 89-year-old Dan Mayers.

The champ, Gerzhoy pinpointed his favorite game as his attacking win against IM Romanenko.

The game could have ended in a pretty double check mate if Black captured played 36...Qxh3 allowing 37. Rf8+ Kh7 38. Nf6#.

Unfortunately, Gerzhoy was not eligible for a GM norm because he only faced two GM opponents. See full standings on the official site.
