Edward J. Wyckoff (1958-2011)
 

Edward Joseph Wyckoff, a former USCF and Massachusetts Chess Association member from Albuquerque, New Mexico, formerly of Quincy and Dorchester, Massachusetts, died Monday, January 3, 2011 in Albuquerque, after a long illness. He was 52.

Mr. Wyckoff was born on July 17, 1958, the son of Francis L. and J. Frances (Harmon) Wyckoff, and had lived in Dorchester, a part of Boston, before moving to Quincy in 1978..He graduated from Boston Latin School in 1975 and received a bachelor's degree from Harvard College in 1980. He later earned a master's degree in history from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

During his student years at Boston Latin, he led the school's chess team as captain to four straight Massachusetts High School Team Championships (Hurvitz Cup) and a couple of high finishes in the U.S. High School Team Championship. During the 1970s he was an active player at the Boylston Chess Club, when the club was located in the Young Men's Christian Union (YMCU) building at the corner of Boylston and Tremont streets in Boston. One of the last tournaments he competed in was the 1988 U.S. Open in Boston. When he stopped playing rated chess more than 20 years ago, his rating stood at 2184. After ,moving to Albuquerque, Mr. Wyckoff became a financial aid officer at the University of New Mexico - first in the undergraduate college and then at the medical school.

Besides his mother, living in Quincy, he leaves his wife, Anne Wyckoff, and a son, Edward Francis Wyckoff, a USCF member, both of Albuquerque; a sister, Dr. Patricia Wyckoff of Mansfield, Mass.; and a brother, Francis Wyckoff. Another brother, Donald Wyckoff, predeceased him. His father died in July 2004.
