In round one of the "Happy New Year Open!" (Jan.2-3) at the Marshall Chess Club this weekend, 13-year-old Alex Ostrovskiy defeated GM Sergey Kudrin on Board One.  White played an uncommon line beginning with 8. Qg3, and, after an unusual counter by Black, proceeded to gain space, initiative and then a winning position.

This was the 2008 National Elementary Champon's first GM scalp (so far), at least until he breaks 2200 (which shouldn't be long now)!
