The Chesapeake Open returns to the Rockville Hilton in Rockville, MD on Jan. 6- 8. The Chesapeake Open is different than other tournaments in several ways. The biggest difference is that prizes are based only on each participant’s score. The payout is structured to encourage fighting chess since the total payout is always more when there is a win rather than a draw.

Other major differences are that the tournament provides sets and boards for all players, clocks in the Championship section, a Sunday morning Continental breakfast, and optional texting of your pairings to your phone (as featured in the December Chess Life). Also, the top four sections will be using 30” increment time controls. Finally, we’ll be using Square for at-the-door registration. Install Square’s Card Case app on your iPhone or Android phone and you can pay in an instant.

Entries and room reservations are running ahead of last year’s 135 players and two GMs have already registered (Alex Onischuk and Larry Kaufman). Hotel rooms at the Hilton are only $75/night but they are going fast.

More information about the Chesapeake Open and online registration is available at http://thechesapeakeopen.com. The current advance registrations are here.
