2008 National Burt Lerner Elementary Championship Attracts 2186 Young Competitors to Pittsburgh Print E-mail

(Crossville, TN)  More than 2,100 Kindergarten through Grade 6 students from over 00 states traveled to Pittsburgh, PA for the 2008 Burt Lerner Elementary Championship tournament held May 9 through May 11.  This annual, national title championship consisted of 7 rounds and was held this year in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, on Duquesne Blvd in downtown Pittsburgh.  It was organized by the United States Chess Federation (USCF).

Section winners:
K-6 Championship: Ostrovskiy, Aleksandr A. won with 6.5 points
K-5 Championship:  Li, Brian S. and Liao, Eric N. tied with 6.5 points
K-3 Championship:  Angermeier, Danny and Polgar-Shutzman, Tom tied with 6.5 points
K-1 Championship:  Feng, Roland and Vasudeva, Tanuj tied with 7.0 points                
K-6 Under 1000:       Four way tie at 6.5 points with Osborn, Nathaniel; Simmons, Tate James; Mohammed, Sarfaraz; Sun, William.
K-5 Under 900:         Stephens, Samuel Alec with 7.0 points
K-3 Under 800:         Three way tie at 7.0 points with Bykovtsev, Agata; Attanagoda, Isuru Adeepa; Osborn, Andrew
K-6 Unrated:             Wang, David Yihao with 7.0 points
K-3 Unrated:             Feener, Joshua Maranatha with 7.0 points

Side events included K-6 Blitz (5 minutes per game) which was won by Alecsandr A. Ostrovskiy with 9.5 points. The K-3 Blitz McClanahan, Bryce with 9.5 points.  The Bughouse (2 player teams compete on 2 boards), a tie with J. Jaffe and N. Rosenthal on one team, Z. Birnbach and Q. Chi on the other, both teams with 9.0 points.

The Biggest Upset was Nathan Chou, rated 406, upsetting his opponent with a rating of  1228. Nathan received a $250 scholarship from mychessphotos.com!
