Timothy W. Spencer (1952-2013)

Timothy Wood Spencer, a former USCF member from St. Petersburg, Florida, died in a car crash on July 26, 2013, in Shanghai, China, while on a business trip. He was 61. He was born on June 27, 1952 in Canandaigua, New York, the son of Harold and Josephine Spencer. After graduating in the early 1970s from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts with a degree in chemistry, Mr. Spencer bicycled throughout the East Coast playing in USCF-rated tournaments. His last-published rating after he stopped competing in tournaments was 1736.

He lived and worked in the Boston, Mass. area before moving to Florida in 1983. In 1987 he met and married his wife, Joanne Spencer. For the past 30 years he had worked for MacDermid Inc., a chemical company based in Waterbury, Connecticut. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Christopher Spencer; a stepdaughter, Candace Pendry; a stepgrandson, Jason Dugmore; and a brother, Terry Spencer.
