For the first time in over a decade, a FIDE World Championship is heading to the United States. From March 19 - 25, 2010, the northern shores of Chicago in Skokie, IL will play host to the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championship. This event is designed for players rated under FIDE 2000 (which includes those without FIDE ratings).

The event will be a 9 round, swiss-system format event with a time control of G/90 + 30/sec increments. A prize fund of $20,000 will be available along with the overall winner being granted the title of FM and a 2200 rating, and the top female player being granted the title of WFM and a 2050 rating. Finally, Texas Tech University, through their SPICE program, is providing 2 scholarships valued up to $36,000 each for the top male and female players under the age of 26.

Additionally from March 26 - 29, the Intercontinental School Team Chess Championships will be held. Teams of 4 players in 5 different age categories (U18, 16, 14, 12, 10) will compete for the title of Intercontinental School Team Champion.

Side events will also be available throughout the event including a FIDE Arbiters seminar being taught by International Arbiter Stewart Reuben (who was also the organizer of the 1st World Amateur Chess Championship in 1995), a Blitz tournament, Chess960 / Fischer Random tournament, a GM tandem simul, and a Chess Education seminar.

We encourage everyone eligible to come out and participate. It's not often that the US gets to host a World Chess Championship, and even less often one for the player that truly drives the chess community - the amateur player!
