The SPICE Cup (September 19-29, Lubbock, TX) has begun at Texas Tech University. Watch American stars such as Olympian GM Varuzhan Akobian and 14-year-old IM Ray Robson battle it out live on Monroi. The tournament is split up into the "A" group with GMs Varuzhan Akobian, Rauf Mamedov, Dmitry Andreikin, Jon Ludwig Hammer, Wesley So and Yury Kuzubov and the 10-player "B" group with GMs Vinay Bhat, Andre Diamant, Eugene Perelshteyn and IMs Ben Finegold, Ray Robson, Gabor Papp, Gergely Antal, Daniel Rensch, Dean Ippolito and Davorin Kuljasevic.

Round 1 saw two decisive games, both in the "B" group.
