FIDE updated the list of participants for the World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, 20 November - 15 December 2009. The only change to the American roster from CLO's last update is that popular CLO writer GM Josh Friedel will play, replacing GM Hikaru Nakamura, who declined his spot to play in the London Chess Classic (December 7-15). Friedel wrote an article about missing out on the World Cup spot in Brazil and he also originally lost out in the 2009 U.S. Chess Championship by one place. "It's a relief to get the spot," Friedel told CLO. Josh has never played in a knockout before and says he is looking forward to it as, "the knockout is a good format for underdogs like me."
