U.S. Chess Federation National K-12/Collegiate Gallops to Houston, Texas!
(Crossville, TN) The U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) will be awarding 14 National Championship titles to some of its youngest members at the annual K-12/Collegiate Chess Championship tournament. This year’s event is at the Hilton Americas-Houston, 1600 Lamar, Houston, Texas 77010, from December 7-9, 2007.
The main event will consist of seven rounds of chess play over three days for kindergartners through college-age players, with participants only playing opponents within their own grade level. A champion will be crowned in each section: K through 12th grades and a collegiate champion. In addition to individual prizes, there is a team competition in each section that also awards national titles. In pre-registrations, so far 38 states are represented--with close to 2,000 young chess enthusiasts expected to complete the final tally!
Two side events will also take place during the weekend’s chess festivities:
The 2007 K-12/Collegiate Bughouse Championship will played on Thursday, December 6 at 11 a.m. (Bughouse is a version of team chess where two-player teams face each other. The time control is also only five minutes per team per game!)
The 2007 K-12/Collegiate Blitz Chess Championship on Thursday, December 6 at 5 p.m. (Blitz chess is played with a time control of five minutes per player per game.)
A simultaneous chess exhibition will take place Friday, December 7 at 9 a.m. with Grandmaster Gilberto Hernandez, the 2007 Texas State Champion, taking on a multitude of challengers!
MyChessPhotos.com, the official photography studio for this event, will award a $250 scholarship to the player scoring the biggest upset!
MonRoi will be covering the games live! Stay tuned!
The Awards Ceremony will take place Sunday evening from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Additional details related to these events can be found at: http://main.uschess.org/tournaments/2007/k12/ . You can also view “Advanced Entries” from our website!
