Chess Life Online adds Grandmaster Maurice Ashley's bio to our gallery of top players. In 1999, Maurice made history by becoming the first Black Grandmaster. Known for his aggressive style and fighting spirit on the board, Maurice is also renowned as an organizer, commentator and teacher. His passionate stance against quick draws has inspired many American tournaments to prohibit draws before a certain number of moves (usually 30 or 40), including the U.S. Championship and the New York Masters.
