Shankland on Brazil: Focused on the Knockout by GM Sam Shankland. This piece chronicled Sam’s successful trip to Brazil for the Continental Championships. According to Judge "f-pawn" Michael Aigner, “The author allows readers to climb into the mind of a young and motivated Grandmaster on the warpath” while Jennifer Vallens said, “I felt like I was taken on his journey with him. His love of competition shines through brilliantly in this article.”

I came to Brazil with one goal in mind and only one priority- qualify for the World Cup. I love the concept of knockout style tournaments and I think this is the best way to run any individual sport (I cite tennis as a prime example), both for the fans and for the players. Everyone loves filling out a bracket, matches go down to the wire, and the high stakes “win or go home” kind of game makes for some real excitement.
Shankland continues to climb the world rankings, and he recently wrote a two-part series for CLO on his quest from Grandmaster to the top 100 players in the World. See part I here and look for Part II early next week.
