steve-dean-2009.jpgSteve Ferrero of Glen Gardner, NJ, who had been one of the most active chess players in the country for decades, passed away suddenly this week. Steve was one of the most enthusiastic and generous chess players I've ever known, always willing to help analyze or review someone else's game with them.  He had a sharp tactical style and was always a big proponent of 1. b3.

Born in Hoboken, he was a computer consultant with Loreal USA Cosmetic Co in Clark, NJ.  Steve was a loving son of Betty Ferrero - Stevens and the late John Ferrero, a dear brother to Jack and Lee, uncle to Katie, Samantha, John and Victor. He is also survived by his long time companion Mary McCallion. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Find more details here.

Steve was the first member of our Academy back in 2007 and we (the Dean of Chess) are holding a memorial Grand Prix on December 1st.  All of the profits will go to Steve's favorite charity,  St. Jude's Children's Hospital.  See more information at deanofchess.com.

Here is a typical one of Steve's wins using his favorite Latvian Gambit from this year's US Amateur Team East.
