The 5th Annual Chesapeake Open was held from 11-13 January in Gaithersburg, Maryland. 132 players particpated playing in six sections. The Championship section, which had 31 players rated over 2000, was won by IM Elmir Huseynov with a score of 4.5.

The tournament used a score-based payout scheme with a bonus for first place in each section. The combination yielded a payout of $1000 for IM Elmir Huseynov. Scott Low (2265), Jared Defibaugh (2352), and Chris Sevilla (2042) tied for second with scores of 4.0. The Maryland Chess Association web site has the final standings and you can find USCF-rated results on MSA. Check out the Maryland Chess Association facebook page for photos and upcoming events.

In round 3 Scott Low had a nice win against GM Larry Kaufman.

Two of the most interesting games were both in the fifth round. In the first one Chris Sevilla (2042) defeated Robert Fischer (2042). The interesting thing is that White never gets a chance to move either rook during the game.

In an interesting game between GM Kaufman and Todd Bryant (2276), Kaufman ended up with four minor pieces against a queen and rook. You don't see this kind of material imbalance very often.
