After five draws, all bets were on the Alexander Grischuk- Boris Gelfand World Championship Candidates match in Kazan, Russia to go to playoff. But the Israeli GM won the final game in an exciting Grunfeld, earning the right to challenge World Champion Viswanathan Anand in 2012.

Gelfand defeated our own US Champion, Gata Kamsky in the semifinals. Gelfand also has some ties with the United States, which CLO contributor Andi Rosen illustrated in a 2009 article after Gelfand won the World Cup
