Grandmasters Giorgi Kacheishvili, Alexander Shabalov, Aleksandr Lenderman and Sergey Kudrin tied for first at the National Chess Congress in Philadelphia with 5/6 each. This netted each of them $1400 with Kudrin taking home a $100 bonus for having the best tiebreaks. In round four Kudrin pulled ahead with a crucial victory over Kacheishvili.

In round five, Kudrin drew against Shabalov while Kacheishvilli and Lenderman both won. In round six, Lenderman and Kudrin drew, allowing Shabalov and Kacheishvilli to catch up in the final round with wins over talented but lower rated opponents, the young New York State Champ Aleksandr Ostrovskiy and Matthew Herman of the New York Knights.
