Scholastic Chess: My Coach is the Best
My Coach is the Best Because.... Kids, do you think that your chess coach is the best? The USCF believes that all coaches are the best. They are mostly volunteers who love the game or teachers and parents who can see the educational benefits of learning this game. We would like to recognize every coach individually. That's just what our Coach's Spotlight will do.

Write a 150 word essay that tells us what your coach does for your club and why your coach has made the club the best. If you have any pictures of your coach or your club that would be great. Then the U S Chess Federation will recognize these wonderful people on our website.

Michael Zabawa

My coach is Mr. Michael Zabawa, and I think he is the best chess coach! He has been coaching chess for over 25 years. He coaches the chess players at South Side Middle School and Anderson High School. He has had many players and teams through the years win many awards at state and national tournaments.

What I think makes him such a great coach is his love for kids and chess. He always encourages his students to look for the best move, both at the board and in life. I would like the US Chess Federation to recognize him for being a great coach, especially since he is retiring this year from teaching. Mr. Zabawa will always be the best!
