Karpov avoids further weakening with 13. ... h5?, which would allow a variety of attacking moves, such as Rh1-h3, and a possible Bxg6.

An alternate choice was 13. ... Nf6, because now Black doesn't mind 14. Bb5+ Kf8 with the idea of Kg7.
